Pingu is Knighted!
Nils Olav, a penguin, was knighted in London!
The black and white fish eating bird who is a resident of Edinburgh Zoo, the original Nils Olav was made an honorary member of the King's Guard in 1972 after being picked out as the guard's mascot by lieutenant Nils Egelien. The guards adopted him because they often toured the zoo during their visits to the Edinburgh Military Tattoo.
The king penguin was named after Egelien and Norway's then-King Olav V. When the penguin died he was replaced by a second penguin, who inherited the name and rank.
The current penguin was promoted from honorable regimental sergeant major to honorary colonel-in-chief in 2005.
The knighthood ceremony began Friday morning with speeches and a fanfare before the penguin arrived, under escort with the King's Guard. Nils then reviewed the troops lined up outside the penguin enclosure at the zoo, waddling down the row of uniformed soldiers, occasionally stopping to crane his neck and peer inquisitively at their crisp uniforms before being kicked guided by his handler.
Nils was then knighted by British Major General on behalf of Norway's King. The penguin's colonel-in-chief badge, tied to his flipper, was swapped for one symbolizing his knighthood.
The other penguins cheered and gave a 21 flipper salute, no they didn’t.

The ceremony, which dates back centuries, is an annual event marked by drinking.
At the centre of the festivities is a male goat, a chicken and a drunk.
Declan Declan McDeclan, chairperson of the organizing committee, told NTS. "Well, we be needing a King, cause them damn Brits keep taxing our booze."
At least 100,000 idiots are expected to attend the celebration this year, which also features a horse and hooker shows and lots of whiskey.
"King Puck," the goat, will enjoy stately care and regular feeding before being roasted. "He will have regal duties until we turn him into a kebab." said Declan.
