Yesterday the BBC News website reported that Pub-goers to be tested for drugs. Pub-goers in Aberdeen are facing a drugs test before entering bars as part of a crackdown by Grampian Police. Officers in the force will be the first in Scotland to use an Itemiser - a device which can detect traces of drugs from hand swabs in a matter of seconds. The test is voluntary, but customers will be refused entry if they do not take part. They could be searched and even arrested if traces are found. The device was trialled by the police force in the area earlier this year. The Itemiser allows police officers or door staff to swab customers hands as they enter a pub or club. It can tell almost instantly if drugs are present - including cocaine, cannabis, heroin and ecstasy. |

| 1997XF11 Will Hit The Earth! | |
Near-Earth asteroid 1997XF11, discovered on December 6 1997 by James Scotti of the Arizona Spacewatch Program, will collide with the Earth in 2028. The orbit of XF11 will bring it close to the Earth many times. In October 2002 it was an excellent target for detailed radar observations, and in 2028 it will be bright enough to be seen without telescopic aid, right up until the point where it crashes into the Earth and kills everything. |

The special interest in this object began when International Astronomical Union minor planet notice #6837 released by Brian Marsden on March 11 estimated a miss distance of only 50,000 km in its passage near Earth on October 26, 2028. Marsden wrote in a press release: "Recent orbit computations indicate it is virtually certain that it will pass within the Moon's distance of the Earth a little more than 30 years from now. The chance of an actual collision is small, but one is not entirely out of the question." |
